US-Iranian physics ventures

I helped organize a 2-week string theory school in Anzali, Iran (on the shores of the Caspian Sea) from Sept. 29-Oct. 9, 2003. The school was a joint venture of the American Physical Society (APS), the APS Division of Particles and Fields (DPF), and the Physics Society of Iran (PSI). We had lecturers from the US, Iran, India, Italy, Sweden, and South Korea. Students -- mostly graduate students and postdocs -- came from Iran, the US, India, Italy, Canada, and Azerbaijan. We have since held a second school, also endorsed by the APS and the PSI, from January 5-14 in Qeshm, Iran. These schools have been very successful, both scientifically and in terms of building connections between the US and Iranian physics communities. We are planning the next joint US-Iran school in Tehran in March 2006.
