Beginner Technique:
Intro to Belly Dance
- WHO: those who have little or no experience bellydancing and want to learn the fundamentals
- WHEN: Tuesday 7-9PM
- WHERE: Village MPR
- WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: comfortable clothing and if you have, a bellydance scarf or any other scarf to tie around your hips.
CD recommendations for learning Middle Eastern rhythms. These all should be
available online at www.maqam.com:
- "Rhythm of the Dance" by Solace
- "Arabic Rhythms Vol. Wahid" put out by Nourhan Sharif
- "Drums of Lebanon" also put out by Nourhan Sharif
For general practice at his beginning stage, I'm recommending Salon Oriental Vol. 3 and Vol. 4. These are club/chillout CDs based on Middle Eastern rhythms and scales. They are available online on Amazon.com.
To buy hips scarves etc. either you do a search on Ebay for "belly dance hip scarves" or you can try www.dahlal.com for starters. They have a very extensive selection, and you will have fun looking at all the costumes.
Anatolia Imports in Rhode Island is a good dealer, but you would have to travel down there, although they do come up for workshops occassionally.
Silk Veil
- WHO: those who have some experience bellydancing and want to learn to incorporate veils and other movements
- WHEN: TBA
- WHERE: TBA
- WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: comfortable clothing and if you have, a bellydance scarf or any other scarf to tie around your hips.
If you would like to get your own veil, I'm recommending that you get a solid-color silk
rectangular veil. You can find one either on Ebay (search "Belly Dance Silk Veil" and
maybe the color you want), at www.amirasbelly.com, or www.silk-veils.com.
Choreo Class
- WHO: those who would like to perform
- WHEN: Sunday 6-8PM
- WHERE: Linsey MPR 2
- WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: comfortable clothing and if you have, a bellydance scarf or any other scarf to tie around your hips - occasionally your costume and any props.
IMPORTANT INFO: For this class, you must be prepared to commit to coming and performing.
Finger Cymbals ["Zils"]
- WHO: anyone who would like to learn finger cymbal technique
- WHEN: TBA
- WHERE: TBA
- WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: comfortable clothing and if you have, a bellydance scarf or any other scarf to tie around your hips.
IMPORTANT INFO: Highly recommended to purchase own props, including saroyan finger cymbals.
