Recycling Program Statement

Brandeis Bottle & Can Temporary Recycling Program to be administered by BURP! as of 2/91

This plan proposes sites for can and bottle recycling in Massell, Castle, East, and North residence quads. These sites were chosen because they met fire, safety, and health standards and codes. They are also centrally located.

The Massell site is in Shapiro lounge in the corner behind a roof support. It is under a sprinkler, visible on two sides through windows, and does not have carpeting. It does not impede travel in case of emergency.

The Castle site is in the commons next to the northern exit. It is under a sprinkler and has carpeting. It does not impede travel through its adjoining doorway in case of emergency.

The East site is in the entrance lounge to Hassenfeld on the side near Pomerantz. It is under a sprinkler and does not have carpeting. It does not impede travel in case of emergency.

The North quad site is in AB lounge against the wall between the water fountain and the bathroom. It is under a sprinkler and a heat detector. It is visible to the quad and is not carpeted. It does not impede travel in case of emergency.

Each site will include either metal or plastic cans not taller than 40 inches. These collection cans will have lids to increase both fire and health safety and to decrease unwanted smell. The collection cans will be lined with plastic bags and checked and maintained at least every week. The sites will be used for collection of bottles and cans only and not for newspapers. Newspaper collection by BURP! is not currently operating, and members will be advised not to place newspapers at these sites. The collection cans will also be clearly marked as recycling of cans and bottles.

Amendment#1: Currently [as of 5/94] the program may place sites anywhere in the residence halls provided that they are approved by the Brandeis Safety Officer and the Office of Campus Life. The recycling of newspaper and other materials has been arranged with special provisions. The above document states the original conditions that created a toe-hold for BURP! in the Brandeis bureaucracy.
Amendment #2: Currently [as of 9/96] the program may place recycling sites anywhere in the residence halls, outdoors or in academic buildings provided that they are approved by the Brandeis Safety Officer, the Office of Campus Life and Facilities Management.
