Seminar Objectives:
Welcome to Writing! The seminar is designed to help you attain and demonstrate college-level literacy skills, prepare you for participation in professional communities where negotiation and debate determine public policy, and to help you pass the WLCE.

Your Requisite Engagement:
Attendance in the seminar is a college requirement. To acquire the skills needed to pass the WLCE, you need to come to class ready to learn. If you miss four classes for whatever reason, you will fail the seminar. After two absences, a warning notice will be sent to the Office of Academic Advising. To make sure you are counted present, be sure to come to class on time, before roll is taken at the beginning.

All undergraduate students at Wheelock are required to take the WLCE and pass all sections before entering practicum and/or certain pre-practicum courses. The exam is also a graduation requirement for students who do not have a professional concentration and decide to obtain an arts and sciences bachelor's degree instead.

If you do not pass all sections of the WLCE by the end of the first year of college, you need to earn a "Pass" in Professional Reading and Writing Seminar AND pass all sections of the WLCE. To pass PRWS, you need to earn a C+ or above in the class.

All transfer students must take RWS 099 during their first semester at the college. Transfer students may complete the RWS requirement, however, by passing all sections of the WLCE in a mid-semester exam session.

Late Work:
In the interest of fairness and because our time is so very limited, I lower grades a full grade point (e.g. from an A to a B) per day assignments are late. If you know that you will not be able to turn in your work on time, get in touch with me and let me know as far in advance as possible.

You will receive full credit for work handed in on time. In the event of a documentable illness or family crisis, be sure to email the instructor by midnight the day of missing class.

Lab:
The computer lab is going to allow us to do interactive stuff that will really help with your writing. I have scheduled very full lab days so that we can maximize our use of some very helpful electronic resources. It is imperative that the class stay on task. Please only use the computers for class related material. Do yourselves a favor and take advantage of this opportunity.
