Samuel W. Bloom, Ph.D.

Samuel W. Bloom, Ph.D. is Professor of Sociology and Community Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, and Emeritus Professor of Sociology, City University of New York Graduate Center. His longtime interests are in the sociology of medical education, and the doctor-patient relationship. His book on the history of medical sociology will be published in 2001 by Oxford University Press.

A founder of the Section on Medical Sociology of the American Sociological Association, he was its chairman in 1964-65, recipient of its Reeder Award as Distinguished Medical Sociologist in 1989, and its Certificate of Appreciation for a Career of Distinguished Service in 1997. At NIMH, he was chairman, 1968-69, of the Review Subcommittee on Social Sciences, Training Branch. He was also a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Commission on Medical Education, 1990-92.
