Chapter 13

Experiencing Illness in/and Narrative

by Susan E. Bell

"Experiencing Illness in/and Narrative" reviews the literature about the experience of illness and narrative. It links this field of research to problems in and of the discipline of sociology itself concerning the meaning of knowledge, the possibility of producing accurate knowledge about social life, and identity. First, it connects the emergence and growth of the field of illness studies and the narrative turn in it to transformations in social and academic life. Second, it reviews what social scientists know about living with illness and some of the problems and questions that remain unanswered by exploring two topics in qualitative research: studies about how illness affects identity and studies about the ways local contexts shape illness experiences and their analysis.
