Chapter 26

"Parallel Sisters": Medical Anthropology and Medical Sociology

by Mary-Jo DelVecchio Good andByron Good

This chapter reviews research that is being done by social epidemiologists to explain disease distributions in the population. This review focuses on eight topics: Social class, social support, work, children, gender, family, social areas, and racial discrimination. Emphasis is placed on gaps in knowledge and issues that need to be studied further. The argument is that future research in this field would benefit enormously by closer collaboration between social epidemiolgists and medical sociologists. Both study the same concepts - but from different perspectives and for different reasons. Work in both disciplines would be enhanced by collaboration.
