Chapter 8

Race, Ethnicity, and Health

by Chris Smaje

Chris Smaje's chapter 'Race, ethnicity and health' first considers the complexity of the concepts of race and ethnicity, and outlines the ways in which they can be appropriately conceived as variables in health research. It goes on to review the evidence for racial or ethnic differences in health status and health care utilization on the basis of a comparison between data from the USA and the UK. Models of the mechanisms which may underlie these patterns are proposed and the evidence for them discussed.
