Dinner and Discussion: Judaism, Homosexuality, and Chinese Food

Do you like free food? Discussing interesting Jewish topics? Hanging out with friends from BaRuCH and Shalem? Come have a philosophical discussion over dinner with your friends! This week's theme is Homosexuality, Judaism, and Chinese food. All food will be vegetarian, kosher-style, and totally free. Stay for as long as you have time for, speak your mind, and be a part of the community.

Rabbi Steven Greenberg is a senior teaching fellow at CLAL, The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership. He is an orthodox Jew who has the courage to address issues that have been long ignored in the orthodox jewish community. Come ask questions and join the conversation in any or all of the following forums...
Friday: 8 30 PM in Sherman Function Hall: hear Rabbi Greenberg speak about his personal story and struggle as a gay and committed Orthodox Jew.
Saturday @ 1 30 PM: Schwartz Audtitorium, a panel discussion with Rabbi Greenberg, Father Walter Cuenin, and James Mandrell, chair the of the WMNGS department for a jewish, catholic, and academic perspective on religion and homosexuality.
Saturday @ 8 30 PM: a screening of "Trembling Before God," a documentary film about gay and lesbian Orthodox Jews in which Rabbi Greenberg is featured. Q&A to follow the screening.

Join FMLA and Shalem, Brandeis' Jewish LGBTQA group, for a night of literature and learning with Leslea Newman, award-winning writer and poet Laureate of Northampton MA. Leslea Newman is the author of many wonderful and controversial books, most notably 'Heather Has Two Mommies'. She will be speaking about the intersection of her Jewish and lesbian identities and the issues she has come across, as well as conducting readings from her work. An evening not to be missed!

I'm Fasting and You Want to Talk About Sex?

For centuries people have struggled with the difficult Biblical verses in Leviticus seeming to prohibit male-male sex. This portion is traditionally read on the afternoon of the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. If you struggle, have struggled, or think you will struggle with these verses, or if you just want to have something to think about to keep your mind off food, then come to the Hillel Lounge at 6 PM, Sunday, October 5 to hear Rabbi David Dunn Bauer lead a text study about this issue. Dinner will be provided (it's not Yom Kippur yet!).
