BRANDEIS IBS EMERGING MARKETS INVESTMENT CLUB

History

The club was founded in March 2004 by Hiroki Nakagiri (MBA 2005, Winner of the Leadership Award 2005). In true entrepreneurial spirit, Hiroki invested USD10,000 of his own money into launching the club is first portfolio. He assembled a team of 11 who were committed to his vision of leading the most successful investment club at IBS to date.

Whilst the club at inception was called the Emerging Markets Association, the investments were heavily weighted on China. With new members joining from the class of 2006, the club was encouraged to diversify into other emerging markets. From the research conducted by these new members, the club developed a strong rationale for investing in the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China). The club eventually changed its name to Emerging Market Investment Club (EMIC).

The club grew from its original founding eight members to seventy in the space of a year. The club has hosted many events (see past events) and inspired many to pursue a career in the investment industry.

The club returned the initial investment from Hiroki when he graduated. The success of the club won the support of the Dean Peter Petri, who has arranged for the club to win a mandate to invest USD25,000 on behalf of the University.

Beginning in late fall of 2005 the club began managing the $25,000 allocated by the university and has increased the holdings to more than $30,000 in less than six months using a disciplined and thorough approach to investing.
