New campus center construction stays on schedule

According to a memo to be released by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, construction on the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Campus Center is expected to be completed by the end of 2002 spring semester.

The interior of the building will be furnished during the summer of 2002 and students should have the full use of the building by fall of 2002.

The utilities that will support the new building are already in place, and pre-drilling will begin this week in order to prepare for the removal of the large rock in the middle of the site.

The actual blasting and removal of the rock will take place the week of Jan. 22.

The installation of the foundation is scheduled to begin in late March in order to coordinate with the steel delivery expected in early May, due to the busy construction market. Although it is not yet clear what will happen to the Usdan Student Center once the Shapiro Campus Center is completed, Associate Vice President for Operations Edward Adelman said hopefully Usdan will be used as a means to “centralize student services.”

Students who have any questions regarding the Shapiro Campus Center should contact Adelman at x64410 or Chief of Staff of the Office of the Executive Vice President Daniel Feldman at x68405.
