Suggested textbooks:

[R] Lie Groups, an Introduction Through Linear Groups, by W. Rossmann (Oxford)
[W] Foundation of Differentiable Manifolds and Lie Groups, by F. Warner (Springer)

Prerequisites: since several first-year students have expressed interest in the course, I will NOT assume familiarity with the material from 110ab. We will start with linear groups following [R], hoping to cover material from its first 4 chapters and Chapter 3 from [W], and to have time for other topics (representations? discrete subgroups and homogeneous spaces?) based on the preference of the instructor and the audience.

The table of contents of [R] gives a fairly reasonable picture of the syllabus of at least the first half of the course, and contains a link to the pdf file of the first chapter.

Homework will be assigned once every one or two weeks. Please register or e-mail me if you would like to attend.

Homework 1: [R], Problems 1, 5, 6, 7 from 1.1 and 1, 4, 7, 8 from 1.2

Homework 2: [R], Problems 2, 3, 8, 9 from 2.2, 9, 15 from 2.3 and 6, 10, 12 from 2.4; see [R, Sections 2.1-2.4]

Homework 3: [R], Problems 1(a), 2, 4 from 2.5, 2, 3, 5(a) from 2.6 and 1, 2, 3, 4 from 2.7; see [R, Sections 2.5-2.7]

Have a great semester!
