Storing NMR Data on CD-RWs

Introduction

The software I am using is Roxio CD Creator.   It is not the only software for formatting and writing CD-RWs and it is not necessarily the best but it is legal on our PCs. In order to drag-and-drop files to a CD-RW it must first be formatted.   For the present I will supply formatted disks to labs which do not possess a CD Writer.    Microsoft does not include a tool to format CD-RWs although you can write to them directly and slooooowly if you have a CD writer which supports CD-RWs.   Formats are not interchangeable so the media you get from me can only be written to on computers with CD Creator installed.    The Dell computers in Friedland 102 are generally available and have CD writers.   CD Creator is the software supplied by Dell with their CD writers.

To get your data from /usr400 you need to sftp to the computer gamble.nmr.brandeis.edu . I have a page which describes how to use sftp. You will need to substitute gamble.nmr.brandeis.edu for the machine groucho in the illustration.

Writing Data to CD-RW

When you put the formatted CD-RW into the CD drive a window will open showing what files, if any are on the disk.   You can drag-and-drop files to the disk just as you would a floppy or ZIP disk.   You can erase files by dragging them to the trash.   Writing to the formatted CD-RW is convenient and fast.

Reading Data on the Sun

Start by logging into the Sun computer Cosy in the usual way.  Start Vnmr.   In the command window you want to type the command  "
listenon" followed by a return.   This allows you do  use point-and-click to open a data fid.

Next put the CD-RW in the CD drive.    A window will open listing all the files on the disk.   You can change the way the files are displayed by clicking on View.

You need  move about the directories on the disk the same way you might on a PC.   When you find a spectrum SOMETHING.fid that you want to open in Vnmr simply click on it and it will openned by Vnmr.
If the spectrum does not open you probably forgot to type in the command "listenon." See above

When you are finished with the disk you may either select Eject from the drop-down menu or push the button on the drive.

You should exit Vnmr in the usual way before logging out.
