Accessing UNet filespace - Illustrated

The Official ITS web page can be found at UNet Space. Another resource is Steven Karel's OS X page. Some people find pictures helpful so here is a version with images from my computer. I am running Windows XP. Windows 2000 users will see something slightly different. Please note that PC Setup only works on campus. Off-campus you need to use SFTP to access your files.

PC Setup

Your UNet filespace is accessible on a share called unethome. You need to do the following.

In the lower left of your screen click Start and then Run.

After you click on Run you will need to type in \\unethome\ your_username on the command line.

You then want to click on OK and a new window will open. If the machine you are using is joined to the Users Domain, i.e., you logged in using your UNet username and password, the same as you would for mail, then a new Windows Explorer Window will open showing you your UNet home directory, like this:

If you are not using your UNet account on a machine in the Users Domain then you will be asked for your name and password. You will need to enter your name as illustrated and your UNet password.

SFTP

If you are home none of the above will work. You will have to use the file transfer piece of the SSH Secure Shell for Windows. If I set up your computer it is already installed. SSH for Windows is available for Brandeis users at http://diane.unet.brandeis.edu and http://groucho.unet.brandeis.edu. I have to put in a plug here for using SSH and pine as an efficient way to read your mail. Please note I am using SSH V. 3.2.9 which may look different from earlier versions.

And here for people who like pictures is how it looks. University supplied desktop machines have an SSH folder on the Windows Desktop. You need to double-click on the folder to see the programs inside. Normal program installation puts the icons on the desktop.

Double click on the SSH Secure File Transfer icon, the yellow folder. A new window will open.

Now click on Quick Connect and login window will open. You can log into either groucho.unet.brandeis.edu or diane.unet.brandeis.edu

Once you have successfully logged in another small window will open encouraging you to give a name to this connection. If you give it a name then the next time you can select the connection from Profiles menu, next to Quick Connect.

You will see a big window of which this illustrates only a part. You can drag and drop files in the normal way.

To close the connection click on the Disconnect icon .

Notice the folder and terminal icons on the right. You can move between terminal and file transfer windows by clicking on one or the other of these icons.
