12-4-99: Boston "T" Party- Harvard:

Hmm... this one happened a while ago. The Intamural champs Andy, Matt, Naomi and Steve attended and placed second in the lower bracket, defeating Yale-Aleks, BC and BU. I don't remember any details about the trip.

2-5-00: Terrier Tussle- Boston U.:

Brandeis sent 2 teams. One consisted of Andy, Ted, Jason, and Andy R. and the other of Chris, Scott, Kate, Cheryl. The first team finished 3rd in the lower bracket, beating MIT-Ahmed , 2 BC teams, BU , and the other Brandeis team. Andy finished 8th individually.

2-12-00: NAQT Sectionals- Harvard:

In Division I Brandeis sent the intramural champion team of Andy, Naomi, Steve and Matt. The team found itself often overmatched, but was able to win against Dartmouth, BU, and Williams, and lost closely against NYU and Princeton B. In Division II Brandeis sent 2 teams. The first, composed of Chris, Ted, Jason, and Jen did quite well, going 6-7, securing a spot on the nationals waitlist. The second team, Scott, Anya, and Kate had a rougher time of it, but gained a lot of valuable playing experience.

2-26-00: ACF Regionals- Harvard:

Brandeis’ team of Andy, Ted, and Steve G. had a pretty good day, finishing 4th and securing 2 wins each against MIT and Yale B. Both Ted and Andy finished in the top 5 individually. Congratulations to Harvard’s David Farris, who, playing on Wellesley’s team, was able to bring them to an unanticipated championship at regionals while capturing the individual scoring title himself. Congrats also to Harvard A, who played extremely well despite giving up David, and a very strong Yale A team.

2-27-00: Beltway Bandits IV- George Washington Univ.:

Dave, Scott, Jason, Mike and Cheryl attended, earning a 4-6 record. I have no other details.

4-7/8-00: NAQT ICT- Boston U.:

After receiving a last minute bid we sent a hurriedly composed Division I team of Andy, Meri, Manor, Naomi, Kishor and Bobby to BU to be drubbed in the Friday evening matches. They recovered much in the Saturday swiss pairings and ladder play, eventually racking up 4 wins, finishing 39th in the country (Andy was named an Undergraduate All-Star and got a nice shiny trophy). Highlights of the tournament included Friday night dinner with the Florida team at Uno’s and an exciting car ride to the tournament, which went a long way to creating team unity (you don’t want to spend your last moments with strangers!). Many other Brandeis team members helped out at the tournament, including Scott, Kate, Chris, Ted and Jason. Thanks to them, since their efforts netted the team 2 sets of free NAQT questions.

4-15-00: Bulldogs Over Broadway- Yale:

Overall, a rough day. Andy had trouble finding the event, which had been moved the day before, leaving Scott, Steve, and Kate to fend for themselves in the morning rounds. The questions were a bit harder than expected, with many of the packs coming from the same writer. We especially appreciated the relief given by Dartmouth’s pack, which seemed to be more on par with the playing level of the majority of the players, while still being interesting and well written. Swarthmore (both teams) seemed to thrive on anything thrown at them, but all the other teams had some complaints about the difficulty, as well as the negative effects of having one person write many of the packs. While a good distribution was maintained, variety within catagories seemed diminished. On the positive side, we beat arch-nemesis Yeshiva and Andy received a "Pocket Partner" (pocket handbook for cops including the street names of illegal drugs and the phone number of every police department in the country) as a prize for 2nd place individual scorer. It was promptly put to use on the way back to Andy's car, which was parked in a non-university section of New Haven. Despite our dissappointment with the questions, our thanks go out to Yale for bringing one more tournament to the New England area.
