זכריה פרק יב פסוק יב
וְסָפְדָה הָאָרֶץ
מִשְׁפָּחוֹת מִשְׁפָּחוֹת לְבָד מִשְׁפַּחַת בֵּית דָּוִיד לְבָד וּנְשֵׁיהֶם
לְבָד מִשְׁפַּחַת בֵּית נָתָן לְבָד וּנְשֵׁיהֶם לְבָד:
Zechariah Chapter 12 Verse 12
And the earth will mourn, each family alone, the family of the house of
David alone and their wives alone, the family of the house of Natan alone and their wives alone.

והיו באים לידי קלות ראש, התקינו שיהו נשים יושבות מבחוץ ואנשים מבפנים. ועדיין
היו באין לידי קלות ראש. התקינו שיהו נשים יושבות מלמעלה ואנשים מלמטה
Babylonian Talmud Tractate Succah
51a-b
Mishnah. One who has not seen the
happiness of the water drawing has not see happiness in his days. After the
first Yom Tov of the holiday, they went down to the ezrat nashim and
would make a great arrangement…
Gemara.
What was this great arrangement?
Rabbi Elazar said: like that which we
learned. At first it was smooth and they
surrounded it with a balcony, and they established that women should sit above
and men [should sit] below. The Rabbis
learned: Originally, the women were
inside and the men were outside, and they would come to frivolity. They established that women should sit
outside and men inside, and they would still come to frivolity. They [then] established that women should sit
above and men [should sit] below.

פרק ה הלכה ב
ומתקנין שם תיקון גדול מה
תיקון היו עושין שם שהיו מעמידין האנשים בפני עצמן והנשים בפני עצמן... ממי למדו
מדבר תורה וספדה הארץ משפחות משפחות לבד תרין אמורין חד אמר זה הספידו של משיח
וחורנה אמר זה הספידו של יצר הרע מאן דאמר זה הספידו של משיח מה אם בשעה שהן
אבילין את אמר האנשים בפני עצמן והנשים בפני עצמן בשעה שהן שמחים לא כל שכן מאן
דאמר זה הספידו של יצר הרע מה אם בשעה שאין יצר הרע קיים את אמר האנשים בפני עצמן
והנשים בפני עצמן בשעה שיצר הרע קיים לא כל שכן
And they would make a great arrangement. What arrangement would they make there? That they would set up the men by themselves and the women by themselves… From whom did they learn? From the statement of the Torah “And the earth mourned, each family alone.” Two lecturers [commented on this verse]. One said that this is the eulogy of Moshiach, and the other said that this is the eulogy of the evil inclination. [According to] the one who said that this is the eulogy of Moshiach, if at a time where they are mourning you say that the men should be by themselves and the women should be by themselves, when they are happy, all the more so! [According to] the one who said that this is the eulogy of the evil inclination, if at a time where the evil inclination does not exist you say that the men should be by themselves and the women should be by themselves, when the evil inclination does exist all the more so!

A great arrangement – of great benefit.
And it was that they would prepare a place for the women and a defined
place for the men and the place for the women was higher than the place for the
men in order that the men should not look at the women.

...עצם הדין שאף אם האנשים הם בצד אחד והנשים בצד אחר אסורין הן להיות בלא מחיצה הוא... דינא דאורייתא. וראיה מסוכה... שהקשה... שאסור להוסיף שום דבר בבנין הבית ובעזרה ותירץ רב דקרא אשכחו שצריך להבדיל אנשים מנשים… ואף שאינו אלא קרא בדברי קבלה יש למילף שפיר שהרי לא בא הקרא לחדש איסורין… אלא שנאמר בקרא... שיספידו כדין התורה אנשים לבד ונשים לבד.
Iggrot Moshe Responsa Orach Chaim I Chapter 39
The rule that even if the men
are on one side and the women on the other it is forbidden without a Mechitza is… a biblical rule. And the proof is from Succah… that [the Gemara] questioned… that it is forbidden to add anything to
the temple and the courtyard, and Rav answered that
they found a verse [which states] that it is necessary to separate men from
women… And even though the verse is only
in the prophets, one can learn from it, because the verse didn’t come to create
prohibitions… rather that it says in the verse that… they should mourn like the
law of the Torah, men alone and women alone.
צריך לומר שהאיסור הוא רק משום קלות ראש... ונתברר שצריכים מדאורייתא לעשות גזוזטרא…
אבל מסתבר לעניות דעתי שסגי במחיצה גבוהה עד אחר הכתפים, דהרי חזינן שהמחיצה אינה מצד איסור הסתכלות...
It is necessary to say that
the prohibition is only because of frivolity… and it has become clear that
biblically one needs to make a balcony… but it seems to me that it is enough to
have a mechitza higher than the shoulders, for we have seen that the mechitza
is not to prevent looking...
…יהיה אסור לנהוג בו קלות ראש בתפלה מדאורייתא. אבל מוכרחין קצת לומר שדין זה הוא מדאורייתא בכל מקום קבוץ... ובלא צורך קבוץ אף במקדש מותר שהרי חנה התפללה סמוך לעלי הכהן ...
It is biblically forbidden to act with frivolity during prayer, but it is somewhat necessary to say that this law is biblical in any place of gathering… and without a need for a gathering, even in the temple it is permissible, because Chana prayed next to Eli the priest…
