Assignment for Wednesday, October 20

Reading:
  1. Edmund Gettier, "Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?"
Notes and questions on the reading:
  1. If you have studied the previously distributed "Notes on Logic" (part II), you should understand what is meant by such logical expressions in Gettier's paper as "necessary and sufficient conditions," "sufficient condition," "necessary condition," and "iff." If not, then you need to study those notes until you do.
  2. What is Gettier's thesis? (It is stated in the penultimate sentence of par. 1, and again in par. 7: can you explain what it means?)
  3. What is Gettier's first case (pars. 3 and 4) supposed to establish? How does it do so?
  4. What is Gettier's second case (pars. 5 and 6) supposed to establish? How does it do so?
