ENG 171A: History of Literary Criticism
Miles Rind
January 17, 2003
ASSIGNMENT FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 21
Reading: Plato, Republic, excerpts from books II, III, and X (CT, 18–38 or PDF files on course web site).
Note: The excerpt from book X is far more important for our purposes than the excerpt from books II and III. You should therefore give the greater part of your attention to the excerpt from book X. I will have a few things to say about the excerpt from books II and III, but will give less time to it in class.
Question: About three-quarters of the way through our excerpt from book X, Socrates says: “But we have not yet brought forward the heaviest count in our accusation.” What is this “heaviest count”?
