ASSIGNMENT FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 29
(FINAL CLASS SESSION)

Reading: Cleanth Brooks, “The Heresy of Paraphrase” and “Irony as a Principle of Structure” (CT, 961–974)

Question: What might Brooks mean by the “heresy of paraphrase,” and what is his principal objection to it?
(I say “what might Brooks mean,” not “what does Brooks mean,” because it is not altogether clear what he means!)
