Fall 2009
This semester, SGAC held a fundraising coffeehouse, hosted a Panel of Experts, sold Halloween Candygrams, and more!
Student Global AIDS Campaign Coffeehouse
Thanks to everyone who came to our coffeehouse! Acts included Crowd Control, JFA, Voices of Soul, and Starving Artists. We raised $132, which we donated to  the Samoei Community Development Programme in Kenya, which provides services to over one thousand children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
Panel Discussion on AIDS
The event featured a panel composed of:
Mark Auslander - Assistant Professor in Anthropology, Director of the Interdisciplinary MA Program in Cultural Production
Sarita Bhalotra - Associate Professor at the Heller School, Medical Doctor
Donna Gallagher - Registered Nurse, PhD Candidate at the Heller School
Joan Press - Associate Professor of Biology
The panelists discussed their own personal experiences with HIV/AIDS and shared observations about reactions when the disease was first discovered. They also offered insights and suggestions about dealing with HIV/AIDS today.
Halloween Candygrams
SGAC sold Candygrams in Usdan! Candygrams are
bags containing candy, a condom, and a Halloween
message. They were put in students’ mailboxes in time
for Halloween. The money we raised was put towards
bringing the AIDS Quilt to campus for World AIDS Week
and the rest will be donated to Keep A Child Alive.
Alicia in Africa Screening
Alicia in Africa is a documentary that was funded
by KCA (Keep a Child Alive), an organization based in
Kenya that provides medical care and other support
services to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa
and India. The documentary follows recording artist and
KCA Global Ambassador Alicia Keys as she travels in
Africa and investigates the impact of HIV/AIDS.
