Dental dams are rectangular pieces of latex used for safer sex protection while performing oral-vaginal or oral-anal sex. Many are flavored for added pleasure. SSIS sells vanilla flavored dental dams, which are white, and berry flavored dental dams, which are purple. Many STIs can be transmitted from either partner to the other during oral sex, which makes it important to use a dental dam.

Dental dams should be placed on the area in contact with the mouth. Lubrication can be used, especially on the side of the dental dam facing the body. Make sure not to flip over the dental dam during use to prevent the transmission of STIs between partners. Also, when switching from the vagina to the anus, or when switching from one partner to the other, do not use the same dental dam. Get a new one.

An alternative to using a dental dam is ordinary plastic wrap, non-microwavable, which should be used in the same way as a dental dam. Also, a condom can be cut lengthwise down one side and opened up to use as a dental dam, and a latex glove can be cut in many interesting ways to use as a barrier.
