Non-latex condoms are an alternative to latex male
condoms. People who are allergic to latex should use non-latex condoms.
Some people prefer non-latex condoms because, unlike latex, polyurethane
transmits heat, allowing body heat and sensations to be felt more easily.
Some non-latex condoms, such as Durex Avanti (25 cents each
at SSIS) and Reality (female condom sold
at SSIS for 25 cents each), are made of thin polyurethane. They are
lubricated and are an effective barrier method against pregnancy and
STI transmission. Polyurethane male condoms have not been proven as
effective as latex condoms for the prevention of STI
and HIV transmission, although they do
reduce the risk of STI and HIV transmission.
Most other non-latex condoms, such as NaturaLambs, are made of animal
skin or intestines. It is important to make sure that these condoms
are sufficiently lubricated before use. While these condoms are effective
methods of contraception, they are not effective against STI and HIV
transmission. They contain naturally occurring microscopic holes which
are large enough to allow some STIs and HIV pass through. However, they
may be a good alternative for partners who are both monogamous and have
been tested for any STIs or HIV. SSIS does not sell animal membrane
condoms.
