My philosophy of education
is that education should empower students, that the student should gain confidence and independence as well as knowledge. My personal mission statement as an educator is to have each student reach his or her goals and gain the highest level of achievement possible. Teaching and learning is in my experience an organic process, which means that the way I help a student reach his or her potential may be different for different learners. I believe I must be perceptive and consistent in setting goals and expectations for students and I also must be willing to vary my teaching methods to help students reach their goals. Content and mastery are equally important to me as an educator. I have learned that where encouragement and praise works for some students, others respond better to being urged to attain even higher levels of achievement. Most students respond best to clear and structured requirements with frequent follow-up.
As a teacher I am also a coach and supporter. I integrate lectures with discussions and in-class activities to get students involved. I break them into groups to solve problems as well as ask them to write independently, take notes, share, revise, peer-edit, and present what they know. I ask students to fully embrace the subject at hand. I do my own homework assignments and activities so that I can foresee any possible questions or particular difficulties that may arise. I enjoy collaborative curriculum development as well as collaborative teaching. I have been teaching for eight years now and am happy in my profession.
