About us: Language and Cultural Enrichment (LaCE) is a weekly after-school program for recently immigrated middle school students from the English Language Learners program at Waltham’s Kennedy Middle School.   Brandeis students are paired up with a dynamic middle schooler.  We plan fun group activities for an hour, and Brandeis students plan an interactive individual activity for the second hour.

Different programs under our umbrella: Not applicable.

Where program meets: Lurias room in Sherman Function Hall.

Days/Hours of program: Thursday afternoons from 3 to 5.

Commitment required from volunteers: Commitment to come to every Thursday session for an entire semester, usually about 10 sessions.

Rough number of volunteers currently involved: 22.

Helpful skill sets for volunteers to have: No specific language skills are necessary as the entire program is in English.  Students should be energetic, enthused, and eager to help their match learn English as well as being punctual.  We look for a variety of personalities because the students also are very different.

Application, training, and/or interview required?: A short interview and a two hour training are required..
