About us: Formerly known as Waltham Reads, T.I.P.S. (Tutoring In Public Schools) gives volunteers the opportunity to mentor elementary school students in the classroom. Not limited to those with teaching aspirations, what we value is the desire to work closely with children and get to know the Waltham community we live in.

Different programs under our umbrella: We work with 3 schools: The Stanley School, The Waltham Family School and The T. R. Plympton Elementary School.

The Stanley School is a public school where volunteers our given the opportunity to work in classrooms ranging from Pre-school to 3rd grade.

The Waltham Family School is a unique school geared to educate recently immigrated families. While the parents are being taught, our volunteers work in the pre-school with their children.

In the spring, our volunteers go to the Plympton after school program to help upper elementary school students prepare for their standardized testing.

Where program meets: The majority of our volunteers go to the Stanley School which is across the street from Brandeis.

Those volunteering in the Waltham Family School use the Waltham Shuttle.

Those volunteering in the Plympton school need to provide their own transportation.

Days/Hours of program: Volunteers go to their assigned schools for approximately 1 hour a week.

Commitment required from volunteers: Volunteers go to their assigned schools for approximately 1 hour a week.

Rough number of volunteers currently involved: 20.

Helpful skill sets for volunteers to have: Patience, creativity, the desire to work with children, and being flexible to the needs of the students and teachers.

Application, training, and/or interview required?: Each volunteer is interviewed and there is one mandatory training session lasting one hour each semester.
