Akakura Mountain Shrine Architecture

The Honden (Kami sanctuary)

The most sacred site in the shrine complex is the Honden (Kami sanctuary) in which the mountain divinities are honored. The Honden, located directly behind the Shinden, is normally kept closed, except for the morning of the Great Summer Festival (Taisai) when it is opened and offerings to the kami are placed within it. The Shinden and Honden are connected by a small bridge, crossed by priests presenting offerings.
