Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy

A searchable online encyclopedia edited by James Fieser ( Articles in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy are currently from three sources (1) adaptations from public domain sources, (2) adaptations from student papers, and (3) original contributions by professional philosophers. Over time, the editor seeks to replace all of the first two type of articles with original contributions by professional philosophers.

The Ism Book: A Hypertext Dictionary of Philosophy

From Peter Saint-André (, the Ism Book was written in 1990 at the request of a businessman who wanted a brief guide to philosophy in the form of a dictionary (and who was influenced by Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism). Because of its original audience and the author's own humanistic vision of philosophy, the author included the popular meanings of the isms, brought out the practical consequences of viewpoints in all the branches of philosophy, defined various types of isms, and even tried to make it entertaining. While several of these aspects over the years have been adjusted, the book retains much of its original stamp.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is the first dynamic encyclopedia. Each entry is maintained and kept up to date by an expert or group of experts in the field. Unlike static reference works which are fixed on the printed page or on CD-ROM and which often become outdated soon after they are published, this document constantly changes with the addition of new entries and the modification of existing entries. Consequently, you can expect the entries in this encyclopedia to be responsive to new research. Moreover, the entries are evaluated by an Editorial Board. Whenever an entry is added or significantly modified, the Board member in charge of that entry is automatically notified and it is then his or her responsibility to evaluate the new material.
