The Draft Report: Challenges (cont.)
We
in the humanities and social sciences cannot depend on our colleagues in
computer science or engineering to build these tools for us . . . . [and] we cannot
depend on commercial interests to develop the software tools that we need. . .
. If
we’re
going to realize the promise of the digital library, we’re going to have to do it
for ourselves . . . and we’re going to need support systems for that development
effort—research centers that are national repositories of expertise, postdoctoral
programs
that emphasize digital scholarship, and graduate programs that train the rising
generation.
